Sherry Fang-Shiuan Leung

Sherry is currently a PhD student in Genetics and Genomics at Baylor College of Medicine. She is interested in developing gene therapy for retinal diseases. Previously, she was an Assistant Specialist at UC San Francisco. She studied morphogenesis and signaling in the mouse model, with a particular focus on craniofacial and foregut development. She graduated from UC Davis where she received a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences. She had joined the entrepreneurship committee and served as the Secretary-General for the Taiwanese American Junior Chamber of Commerce Northern California (TAJCCNC). She also served as the Board of Director for the Taiwanese Junior Chamber of Commerce North America (TJCCNA).

Molly Ting-Yu Lin,

Calico Life Sciences

Molly is currently a scientist at Calico Life Sciences, a company that strives to understand the biology that controls human aging. Before Joining Calico, she completed her Ph.D. in Cell & Developmental Biology at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, with her research focused on studying signaling and metabolic pathways in cancer and metabolic diseases. In her leisure time, she enjoys hiking, traveling and food exploring.

Jennifer Yu-Jen Lin

PhD Candidate,

UC Berkeley

Jennifer is a Ph.D. candidate in the Molecular and Cell Biology program at UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on identifying causal variants for newborns with severe undiagnosed diseases using genomics and transcriptomics, with the ultimate goal of deploying a global genetic disease diagnosis network to help patients with rare genetic disorders. In addition to her academic pursuits, as a VP of BATBA, Jennifer is committed to supporting the development of biotechnology within the Taiwanese community. Jennifer also serves as the president of the Berkeley Association of Taiwanese Students (BATS) for the 2022-2023 academic year, where she is passionate about promoting cultural exchange and building community among Taiwanese students at UC Berkeley and beyond. Outside of her research and leadership responsibilities, Jennifer enjoys painting, dancing, and playing tennis.

Richard Fu,

Richard Fu is a clinical research coordinator at Stanford University with extensive experience of supporting pediatric oncology clinical trials. Richard specializes in coordinating patient information, laboratory samples and compliance documents for pediatric solid tumor studies. Prior to the research coordinator role, he was a researcher investigating the application of gene-modified T cells for hemophilia treatment at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Richard is an ACRP certified clinical research coordinator and a licensed medical technologist in Taiwan.

With vast experiences in highly regulated industries, Prairie has developed a deep expertise in marketing and a strong business acumen. She most enjoy finding new possibilities and bringing the community together. Prairie received her B.S. degree in Business Administration at National Taiwan University, with a focus on Innovation & Entrepreneurship. She then graduated from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business with a focus on Health Enterprise Management.

RC Chin-Wen Lai,

RC Chin-Wen Lai grew up in Taiwan. After getting his medical lab technician certification at National Taiwan University, RC decided to stay in research with Dr. Mi-Hua Tao at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He came to the United States and got his Immunology Ph.D. at Washington University in Saint Louis with Dr. Thad Stappenbeck. At Amgen, RC is an immunoncology Scientist at ASF. During his downtime, RC competes in triathlons and plays volleyball and even tore his ACL. Fortunately he recovered well and is back on the courts. Unbeknownst to many, he is also invested in environmental protection as an instructor and guide in Society of Wilderness, dedicated to protecting the natural and ecological environment in Taiwan through education, habitat preservation, and public participation.

Linya Wang,

Twist Bioscience

Dr. Wang is a microbiologist and cell biologist. She is now working as a Staff Scientist at Twist Bioscience, which focuses on GPCR assay development and therapeutic antibody drug discovery that can be applied to immunotherapy, cell therapy, and target therapy. Prior to entering industrial field, she received her Ph.D. in Microbiology at National Taiwan University College of Medicine, and worked in Institute of Molecular Biology at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. She then finished her postdoctoral training in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at University of Southern California, USA.. She has also been involved in National Taiwan University Alumni Association as the President of Young Professional Group, Taiwanese Junior Chamber of Commerce as the Board of Director, Southern California Taiwanese Biotechnology Association as the President, and Bay Area Taiwanese Biotechnology Association as the President.

Cheng-Chang (Curtis) Chang, MD, PhD

Physician, Adjunct Professor of OBGYN, National Defense Medical Center

Dr. Chang received his M.D. degree from the National Defense Medical Center of Taiwan in 1994, the Ph.D. degree from the Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, National Defense Medical Center of Taiwan, in 2015. He serviced in the airborne troop as a military medical officer (1994~1996). He was trained in general Obstetrics and Gynecology (1996~2001) and Gynecologic Oncology (2006~2012) in Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH), Taiwan, and be an accredited Gynecologic Oncologist in 2012. In 2003, he went to Chattanooga Women Laser and Endoscopic Center, TN, U.S.A., with Dr. C-Y Liu, the Past President of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, to train him laparoscopic female pelvic floor reconstruction. In 2004, he also moved to Sunnyvale, CA, U.S.A., to train da Vinci robotic surgery and completed the first robotic gynecologic surgery in Taiwan in the following year. He has fully authorized to work in the US (green card holder) since Jul-2021, and completed Drug and Medical Device Development: A Strategic Approach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Jan-2022.

Brad Lin is a business development manager at Wiltrom, a spinal medical device company in San Jose. Prior to his current role, Brad obtained clinical knowledge of medical devices through serving as clinical marketing specialist at Siemens Healthineers and knowledge of automation system development at National Instruments. Brad received his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from National Cheng Kung University and bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

Chieh-Te (Jack) Lin,

Jack is a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Davis in the major of biomedical engineering. Before joining the program, he got a master's degree and worked as a data analyst at the University of California, San Francisco. He has multiple years of research experience in medical imaging, specifically interested in leveraging machine learning in image processing and analysis. In his leisure time, he likes to go hiking, skiing, and cycling. He joined BATBA as an organizer in 2023, and is excited to organize informative and fun events for the community.

I am a PhD candidate in Endocrinology at UC Berkeley. My research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of cellular aging, with a particular interest in hematopoietic stem cell aging, which is critical for developing new strategies to delay or even reverse aging. I apply mouse genetics and computational biology approaches (single-cell RNA seq) to study how sirtuins affect hematopoietic stem cell aging.

Ya-Feng (Jay) is a Clinical Pharmacologist at Gilead Sciences working in early and late phase oncology protfolio. Jay received his B.S. degree in Pharmacy at the Taipei Medical University. After two years of being a research assistant under the guidance of Drs. Shawn Hsiang-Yin Chen and Wei-Chiao Chang focusing on pharmacogenetics research, Jay completed his Pharm.D. followed by Ph.D. education in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology with a minor in Biostatistics at the University of Minnesota. His research interests include pharmacometric modeling, pharmacogenomics, and microbiome.

Chih-Chao currently works as a scientist in the cell culture group at Bionova Scientific, working on upstream bioreactors for antibody and viral productions. He earned his Ph.D. degree in biomedical Sciences from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he focused his research on tumor-related signaling pathways in both Drosophila and mammals. He then moved to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for his postdoctoral training, utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to investigate the roles of cell polarity proteins in cell growth and cell survival.
