Navigating a Career in Academia - Dr. Possu Huang and Dr. Danny Chou

274805034_3134419080173132_5540764714420844547_n.jpeg

About this event

COVID pandemic has made people realize the importance of biotech innovations. mRNA vaccines, the most administered vaccines against COVID-19, were unheard of by the general public until the pandemic. With more money pouring into the biotech sector, academic findings are like a powerhouse for innovations of next generation biotech companies. However, there are many challenges in driving discoveries and innovations in academic research. Recently, we have seen many new private initiatives aiming to transform basic science research such as Altos Labs, Arc Institute, and Arcadia Science.

This March, BATBA CAREER FORUM will present the special topic of Career Development in academic research and innovations. We invited two excellent speakers: Dr. Possu Huang and Dr. Danny Chou. Both of them are currently assistant professors at Stanford University. They are going to share with us their career path and the opportunities and challenges in academic research.

Speakers:

Possu Huang, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University

Danny (Hung-Chieh) Chou, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology) at Stanford University

Moderator:  Alan Tung and Yung-Hsin Huang

Time: 3/12 (Sat) 3:00pm PST

Language: English

Speaker bio:

Possu Huang:

[de novo protein engineering]

Dr. Huang had a long-term interest in the field of protein engineering, especially in designing de novo protein structure. After finishing his undergraduate studies in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at UC Berkeley, he completed his Ph.D. degree with Dr. Stephen Mayo at California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He then became a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. David Baker at University of Washington, expertizing in novel design of protein with atomic-level accuracy before establishing his lab at Stanford in 2016. By bridging complexity and functionality that nature protein displays, his lab is focusing on bringing a custom-made protein to a reality.

Danny (Hung-Chieh) Chou:

[Protein engineering in insulin]

Dr. Chou is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University. He received his PhD from Harvard University, working in the lab of Dr. Stuart Schreiber. His Ph.D. research involved the identification of suppressors of cytokine-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells. He then moved to MIT and worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Langer and Daniel Anderson, focusing on the development of glucose-responsive insulin derivatives. Danny started his independent career in the Department of Biochemistry at University of Utah in August, 2014. At Utah, Danny's research focused on protein and peptide therapeutics for the treatment in Type 1 Diabetes and other human diseases. In 2020, Danny moved his research lab to Stanford University to continue their efforts in developing novel insulin therapeutics.

Insights and Career Development in Translational Science with Dr. Felix Yeh and Dr. Damon Ng

batba oct event.jpeg

What’s biomarker research versus biomarker development? How does biomarker play an increasingly important role in current drug discovery efforts? What goes into designing and selecting the best preclinical models to study novel therapeutics? How do we face the challenges for preclinical animal model development when early discovery was already started in the cell models derived from human tissues? If you are interested in these questions and wonder how to venture into these fields, please join us. BATBA invites Dr. Felix Yeh and Dr. Damon Ng to discuss these questions and share their insights and experiences in crafting a successful career in translational science.

Date:10/23/21 (Sat), 4-5 pm

Speakers:

Dr. Felix Yeh, Head of Biomarker, Alector

Dr. Damon Ng, Project Supervisor, Charles River Laboratory

Format:

Language: English

EVENT CO-HOST: STANFORD TAIWANESE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

Speaker Bio:

Felix Yeh, PhD currently serves as the Head of Biomarkers at Alector where he leads the development and execution of biomarker strategy for preclinical and Phase I to Phase III clinical programs in immuno-neurology and immuno-oncology. Prior to Alector, Dr. Yeh was a biomarker scientist at Genentech supporting from preclinical stage molecules to Phase II. He served as the therapeutic area lead for neuroinflammation, metabolism and rare diseases. Dr. Yeh is a recognized scientific leader with his research on the role of microglia in neurodegenerative diseases and work on elucidating the pathophysiological processes of disease.

Damon Ng, PhD currently works at Charles River Laboratories, a supervisor for the in-vivo DMPK division at South San Francisco. He collaborates with sponsors from biotech start-ups to big pharmas to enable and facilitate drug discovery and development. His discovery projects focus on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and tolerability of test compounds, ranged from small/large molecules, viral vectors, siRNA, and antibodies. He graduated with a neuroscience PhD at the University of Iowa and completed post-doctoral trainings at UC Davis and UC Irvine. His neuroscience research specialized in attention, learning, and memory in rodents and non-human primates, using high-density electrophysiology and chemogenetics.
